60th Division, made up entirely of 2nd line territorial battalions from London, went to France in June, 1916 where they remained until they were sent to Salonika at the end of the year. During the six months spent on the Western Front they were employed in holding the front line around Arras and were one of the few divisions in France to avoid the Battle of the Somme.

On 4th August, 1916 the  2/13th London battalion of 179 Brigade moved into the front line at Boyau des Abris and at 10pm on 6th August, two officers and thirty nine men from the battalion raided the enemy trenches opposite their position. A tape was laid to help guide them back to their own lines but unfortunately this tape broke and not all of them were able to make it back. By the following morning, fourteen of the raiding party were still unaccounted for. It was later established that most of these, including William Lamb, had been killed.
